Lightfastness

Lightfastness explains how resistant the image will be to fading when exposed to light over time.

Christine D. uses the following pencils with a higher lightfast rating when she wants to create a piece that is more archival in nature:

CaranD’Ache Luminance Brand Colored Pencils, or Faber-Castell Polychromos Brand Color Pencils with a 2-star rating on the Blue Wool Scale, or Drewent Metallic Pencils with a 6 or higher LF -Lightastness Rating, or Drewent Colursoft with a 6 or higher LF -Lightastness Ratin ,or a combination of the above.

While Christine also makes also pieces with Prismacolor pencils, she recommends this:  If you purchase one of these pieces, it is highly recommended that you consult with a frame shop about glazing and frame them behind UV glass, conservation glass, or museum glass, as those glazing products can filter out up to 98% of the UV rays that fade images over time.

She also recommends if an art piece is going to be exposed to direct sunlight, the cautious thing to do is to have the piece framed behind UV glass, conservation glass or museum glass, no matter what the drawing medium is, so multiple generations can enjoy the work in the years to come.
