Acid and lignin free paper and why it matters:

Question: What is acid-free paper and why do I need it? Answer: The presence of acid in paper affects the life expectancy of the paper. Acid is measured in a pH scale, and it will turn paper yellow over time. In addition to the paper yellowing, the paper itself becomes very brittle. Think of the old newspapers and documents from days gone by that fall apart when you touch them. Paper manufactures recognized this was a problem and took steps to correct it so important documents could be preserved for multiple generations.. Now some manufacturers, but not all, use alkaline to neutralize the acid when they make their papers. But just finding acid-free paper for your important documents and artwork is not enough to preserve them. You must also remove the lignin in them if you want items to stand the test of time.

Question: What is lignin? Answer: Lignin is naturally present in wood pulp. The problem is that when paper that does not have the lignin removed, the lignin itself generates acids as it ages, causing deterioration. Again, the paper turns yellow and becomes brittle.

All of the art I have made as of 2017 is acid-free and lignin-free, If you invest in one of my pieces, I want your family to be able enjoy it for multiple generations. I want the artwork in your home to improve your life and impress your company.

If you want your art collection to last, make sure you purchase work made on acid-free and lignin-free paper, and use museum quality archival materials through the framing process. See my framing tips for additional information about this process.

May your artwork bring inspiration, beauty, and life into your home. -Christine D.
